Meet Wyatt and Kiaan: Polar Expressions Writing Contest Winners
Each year, students in our Primary, Foundations, and Elementary Language Arts programs take part in the national Polar Expressions writing contest, submitting original poems and short stories. This year, many of our students advanced to the second round, and two earned top prizes, an exciting achievement that reflects their creativity, effort, and talent!
Wyatt, a student in Primary 1 at our North Toronto campus, won first place in the poetry contest. This means his limerick, “Silly Monkey Top,” was recognized as the best poem submitted by a Grade 1 student in all of Canada! Meanwhile, Kiaan, an Intermediate 1 student in Downtown Toronto, won third place in the Grade 7 short story contest. Kiaan’s story, which is entitled “Ordinary,” is an exciting tale about the powerful bond between humans and animals—in this case, a man and a stray dog who saves him from peril. We are so proud of Wyatt, Kiaan, and all of our other finalists for their incredible and well-deserved success in this contest! Brain Power had the honour of being the #1 program for young published authors. Congratulations to all!
Meet Ana Mocanu: Making Waves in Business
Meet Ana, an alumna of Brain Power’s Language Arts and Public Speaking programs! Ana just finished her first year studying Finance at Georgetown University’s prestigious McDonough School of Business (a program with a <1% acceptance rate!). Ana wrote us this lovely note recalling the key role that Brain Power played in her academic development:
"My high school career consisted of a heavily STEM-focused curriculum. I had developed a relatively narrow perspective on the skills and perspectives necessary for success. My time at Brain Power taught me to be more open-minded, and more importantly to value a broader set of character traits—not only through their well-developed English programs, but from the calibre of their professors, who were strong role models for thinking and career choices. One of my favourite public speaking games, “Sway,” was introduced to me at Brain Power. I enjoyed the skills it pushed me to develop, and I later integrated it into my High School’s DECA training curriculum, a club I helped found and lead."
Ana’s academic career has been truly impressive, both at Brain Power and beyond. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for our talented alumna! Way to go, Ana!
